Homemade tomato Salsa is incredible! It is packed with vibrant tomato flavours and garden-fresh herbs. It is said that when the Spaniards discovered Mexico in the 1500s, they also discovered the incredible Salsa. Tomato salsa is simple and easy to make, so it is little wonder that it is one of the most beloved dishes in the world. The blend of tomatoes, peppers, spices, and onions creates a medley of flavours that ignites the senses.
Salsa can be traced back to the ancient civilizations of the Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas. It’s a taste of summer with a touch of heat and can set your taste buds ablaze. You’ll have a flavourful tomato salsa with a few simple ingredients that can elevate your meals.
Tomatoes, Onion, Parsley, Lemon, Salt, White pepper, Cumin.
Ripe tomatoes form the base of this recipe; they add a natural sweetness and tang to the dish. Choose ripe tomatoes that are slightly firm in texture. Thinly sliced onions add a sweetness and robust undertone to this dish. This ensures that the onion’s sharpness does not overpower the flavour of the tomatoes.
Fresh parsley adds a refreshing taste and a pop of colour to the dish. In the traditional recipe, salsa uses Coriander; however, in this recipe, we’re using parsley as we prefer the taste of the herb over Coriander. A splash of lemon adds a zesty tang and balances the richness of the spices. Salt and White pepper are essential ingredients. White pepper offers a milder taste compared to black pepper. Cumin provides a warm, nutty, and smoky flavour to the dish.
Dice the tomatoes: Wash the tomatoes and onion thoroughly. Dice the tomatoes into small pieces and finely chop the onion. Rinse the parsley under cold water and pat it dry with paper towels. Remove the stems and finely chop the parsley leaves.
Lime & Spices: Cut the lime in half and extract the juice. Add the lime juice to the chopped tomato and onion. Add cumin, white pepper, and salt to the tomato salsa. Fresh lime juice adds a tangy acidity to the salsa. Combine your diced tomatoes, chopped onion, and parsley—season with salt, pepper, and cumin to taste. Cumin adds a warm, earthy flavour to your salsa.
We recommend that you use ripe, juicy tomatoes. You can finely chop your tomatoes or leave them chunky for texture. You can add lime juice and up the heat with sliced jalapeno chilies. Consider adding avocado for extra creaminess. Diced mango and pineapple can add a tropical twist. Once the salsa is made, make sure to refrigerate it immediately. Store in an air-tight container to prevent any exposure to air. Freezing this salsa is not recommended. Adding lime juice will help to preserve the salsa. Use a clean spoon and only scoop out the required amount; avoid dipping chips directly into the salsa; this will cause contamination and reduce longevity. Store in the fridge for two to four days.
However, it is essential to note that once the lime juice and salt are added to the salsa, it will draw water out of the tomatoes and into the container, making the salsa soggy. Therefore, consume this salad as quickly as possible or make it fresh.
You can serve Tomato Salsa with tortilla chips or alongside your tacos or quesadillas. This condiment pairs well with meat or huevos rancheros. Several other dishes will complement tomato salsa, so pair the dish with fajitas, burritos, and omelets. Also, consider serving the tomato salsa at barbecues, as the salsa complements the grilled meat and cuts through the richness of the steaks, chops, and sausages.
