Looking for an easy recipe? We’ve got one, it’s called Honey Mustard Chicken. Have you ever found yourself in the kitchen, just standing there…wondering what to cook? You’re in the mood for minimal ingredients and big flavour. When you add honey, Dijon mustard and apple cider vinegar to a bowl, it creates an incredible combination of flavours that are truly heavenly.
The best part is that you can use the sauce on different types of protein such as Shrimps, Beef and Turkey. We’ve figured out the exact measurements to create a rather unique recipe. The flavours are sharp, sweet, and balanced.
There’s something very special about honey and mustard chicken. The golden honey, along with the sharp mustard, gently coats the juicy chicken. This recipe has an unusual taste in that it borders on Asian flavours. If you’ve ever tasted teriyaki chicken, then you will know it has these umami flavours that are sweet, salty, and sharp. Well, honey and mustard chicken is a close derivative of that recipe. Try it and you will see.
Chicken breast, Butter, Garlic cloves, Dijon Mustard, Soy Sauce, Honey, Salt, Pepper, Paprika, Apple Cider Vinegar.
Chicken breasts are the main protein component of this dish; however, you can also use shrimp, beef, or turkey. One of the elements that I love about Chicken breast is that it is a fairly lean protein; however, it can be relatively mild in its flavour. Therefore, using a delicious Honey mustard sauce combo can amplify its flavours.
Butter is not traditionally used in Honey and mustard chicken; however, we’ve used it to cook the chicken breast and brown the protein until it has a light golden colour. We’ve found that this helps the flavour along quite well. Garlic cloves adds a savoury quality to the dish; they also complement the sweetness of the Honey and the tanginess of the mustard.
Dijon mustard adds a complex flavour to the overall dish. It is essential to choose Dijon mustard and not regular mustard, which tends to have a very muted taste. You can use any brand of Dijon mustard; many competing brands are just as good as the traditional types that come from France. We’ve chosen dark soy sauce to add a salty, umami kick to the dish. This ingredient adds a lovely dark colour to the chicken breast and creates a harmonious balance of flavours.
Rinse the chicken breasts in running water and pat them dry with a kitchen towel. Clean the garlic and set it aside. Slice the garlic cloves. Cut the chicken into cubes.
Turn on the stove to medium-high heat. Add butter to the pan. Add the garlic cloves. Add the chicken cubes and cook for a few minutes until the water starts to seep out of the chicken. At that point, reduce the temperature to medium-low heat. Season the chicken lightly with salt and pepper. Let the chicken cook until it has browned up to a golden colour. Once it is golden, turn the temperature of the stove off.
Make the honey and mustard sauce. Add the ingredients such as Dijon mustard, honey, apple-cider vinegar, paprika powder, soy sauce to a small bowl and mix well. Thereafter, drizzle all over the chicken breast to coat the chicken. Mix well. Turn on the temperature of the stove to medium-low and cook for three more minutes. This will help the chicken to absorb the flavours of the sauce.
Optional: Slice up some red bell peppers and cut the tips of the green beans. Add oil to a pan, and heat it up on medium-low heat. Add the bell peppers and green beans and let it cook for three minutes.
You can season the veggies with salt, pepper and oyster sauce or soy sauce. You can also use different types of veggies for this dish such as mushrooms, baby corns, baby carrots, broccolini or asparagus.
Pilaf rice is fluffy and fulfilling. The Honey mustard sauce alongside the rice will make every bite of this meal delicious and enjoyable. Mashed potato is also an amazing side dish to serve with the Honey mustard chicken.
It adds comfort as it has a smooth and creamy texture. If you are a fan of greens in your meal, this recipe will be perfect for a Green salad. Fresh vegetables will balance the richness of the Honey mustard chicken by adding contrasting texture and flavour to the dish.
Allow the Honey Mustard chicken to cool down before storing it in the fridge. Storing the chicken in an airtight container is essential to preserve the food. Honey mustard chicken can be stored for up to three to four days, and frozen chicken can be stored for up to three months. It is best to avoid microwaving the frozen chicken, as it releases water while thawing. If you are not in the mood to wait for thawing, place the thawed chicken in the preheated oven at 180ºC/350ºF and reheat for 10 minutes.
You can reheat the refrigerated honey mustard chicken on the stovetop. To do so, place the chicken in a pan and adjust the heat to medium-low. Keeping the heat low will allow you to control the heating process without burning the chicken. Reheat all sides of the chicken for two minutes on each side, and there we go! Enjoy.
