Tomato relish is a sweet and tangy dish that is full of savory flavors. This condiment holds a special place in the culinary world. Unlike sauces or chutneys, tomato relish has a chunky texture with a bold balance of flavors.
Tomato relish has a perfect harmony between the natural sweetness of ripe tomatoes, the warm spices and the acidity of the vinegar. What sets this recipe apart from others is its ability to complement nearly anything. Whether it is slathered on a burger, served on a side of grilled fish, this relish will elevate most dishes.
Fresh tomatoes, Garlic, onion and fresh parsley, Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste, Extra Virgin Olive oil, Paprika, basil, oregano, salt, pepper and brown sugar.
The main ingredients of the tomato relish are tomatoes. This ingredient provides a strong base of sweet and tart flavors. Garlic, onion and parsley add freshness to the relish. Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste add an intense savoriness to the dish. Extra virgin olive oil adds a smooth and fruity flavor in the sauteing process. The spices such as paprika, basil, oregano, salt, pepper and brown sugar elevate the taste of the relish.
Prepare the vegetables: Roughly chop the garlic and the fresh parsley. Grate the tomatoes, onion and gather the ingredients. For this recipe, you can also use a Jar of diced tomatoes. If you choose to do so, it will reduce the cooking time to twenty minutes.
Cook the garlic with the Spices: Preheat the pot on medium low heat. Drizzle the olive oil, add the garlic and the spices and cook for eight minutes. It is important for the garlic to caramelize properly.
Cook the tomato and onion: Add the grated tomato, Worcestershire sauce and onion. Add extra olive oil and stir to mix. Cook for thirty-five minutes. Add the chopped parsley in the last five minutes of cooking.
Rest and then serve: Let it rest for five minutes before serving.
Grilled meat is one of the best matching pairs with the tomato relish. The tangy flavor of the tomato relish cuts down the fat from the grilled meat, like chicken, barbeque ribs, grilled steak or grilled sausages.
Grilled cheese sandwiches or chicken wrap also matches well with the tomato relish. It adds extra flavor making every bite irresistible.
