The Grilled Cheese sandwich has long been considered a classic dish worldwide. Many people have enjoyed this staple meal for ages, and putting it together is incredibly easy.

What makes a great grilled cheese sandwich? It’s the combination of the right cheese and crispy, buttered bread that makes a delicious, quick meal in just a few minutes. This dish is perfect for busy afternoons and serves as an ideal snack for large parties. You can cut the sandwiches vertically, making them easy to eat on the go during family barbecues.
Many people haven’t tried Gouda cheese, which has a rich flavor that’s distinctly different from sturdier cheddar. Gouda features an almost elastic texture, a strong cheese flavor, and melts beautifully. When preparing your sandwich, it’s best to toast the bread in a pan rather than using a microwave to melt the cheese for the perfect experience.

For a grilled cheese sandwich, use breads such as Regular Sliced Bread, Sourdough, Whole Wheat, Brioche, Rye, Ciabatta, and Multigrain. We recommend cheeses such as Gouda, Cheddar, Gruyère, and American Cheese. You can customize the grilled cheese sandwich with different fillings, such as tomatoes, jalapeño, salami, and sun-dried tomatoes. Other ideas include sautéed mushrooms, fig jam, pesto, truffle oil, fried salami, and thinly sliced pepper. Consider mixing different types of cheeses to get a unique flavour. Mozzarella is a stretchy cheese that pairs well with Gruyère.
Spread a layer of butter on both sides of the bread. This step will create a golden exterior. If the cheese is sharp and slightly salty, consider using unsalted butter. Thinly slice the cheese and place it between the two pieces of bread. Set the temperature to low heat. Cooking a grilled cheese sandwich on low heat ensures that the cheese has plenty of time to melt.
A high temperature can cause the bread’s exterior to brown faster than the cheese melts. Place the sandwich on the pan. It takes approximately two to four minutes per side. Press down on the sandwich with a spatula. This method will create an even browning on the exterior surface of the sandwich. Flip the sandwich and cook for another 2 to 4 minutes, until golden and the cheese has melted. Remove the sandwich from the pan and let it rest for a minute before slicing. Providing the cheese with an extra minute will ensure it is stretchy, allowing it to set slightly.
Most people have a grill pan or a regular skillet at home, but not everyone owns a sandwich maker. Using a sandwich maker has its perks. The pre-made shape inside the ‘sandwich-maker’ helps shape the sandwich into a specific design. It also insulates the sandwich by compressing the edges and locking them together. This adds more ingredients to the sandwich and prevents it from falling apart. If you eat a lot of sandwiches, this could be a great tool in your kitchen.
A Caprese salad makes a delightful side dish. Tangy tomatoes, drizzled with balsamic vinegar, basil, and fresh mozzarella cheese, all of which complement this dish well. A rich and creamy tomato soup can elevate the simple cheese sandwich to extraordinary levels of taste and flavour. Caesar salad is another option, with the added chicken serving as a boost of protein.
This sandwich is often prepared fresh. However, if you make a large weekly batch, it can be stored in the refrigerator for two to three days, provided it is a plain grilled cheese sandwich. Fillings such as tomato, pesto, or fig jam can alter the texture of the sandwich.
