This popular spice is renowned across the world. Nowadays, you can buy Cajun seasoning at most supermarkets across the world. Many people are unaware that it can be easily made at home. You can make this seasoning in large quantities and use it as much as you want on your favourite dishes. One of the best parts about making your own seasoning at home is that you increase or decrease the spice levels according to your preference.

Ingredients

Paprika, Onion powder, Garlic Powder, Thyme, Dried Oregano, Cayenne Pepper, Black Pepper, Salt.

Paprika powder is made from ground peppers that are both sweet and smoky. It adds a rich colour and has a mild, sweet flavour in the Cajun seasoning. Onion powder has a savoury taste; it adds a convenient flavour to dishes without the addition of fresh onions. Garlic powder has a deeply concentrated flavour that adds warmth to a dish. It is a favourite in many dishes and it has a robust flavour.

Thyme is an aromatic herb with a very subtle earthiness. It pairs well with most meat dishes and soups. Dried oregano is a potent herb with a slightly bitter flavour. It is commonly used in Mediterranean dishes. Cayenne pepper is known for its heat and adds a spicy kick to the Cajun seasoning. Black pepper is considered the ”king of spices”, it adds complexity to many dishes. Salt brings out the flavour of the other spices and enhances the Cajun seasoning.

Instructions

Add all of the spices to a bowl and mix it. If you’re looking to add bulk and double the quantity, you can add breadcrumbs along with chili flakes. If you’re not a fan of black pepper, you can swap it out for ground white pepper.

Expert tips

We’ve noticed that popular brands use maize crumbs to increase their quantity. If you are using a lot of Cajun seasoning at home, you can consider using finely ground bread crumbs. Another key element is an acidity regulator, also known as Acetic acid, which is commonly referred to as vinegar powder. Yeast extract also features heavily in store-bought Cajun seasoning. This gives Cajun seasoning its Umami taste. If you decide to add the acetic powder, add it in moderation to ensure that the vinegary taste does not overpower the Cajun seasoning.

Consider roasting, sauteing, and grilling with a touch of Cajun. Cajun pairs well with a variety of ingredients, including onion, eggplant, corn, bell peppers, and more.

Want to take your mayonnaise to the next level? Add some Cajun spice and create a fiery dip. Is Cajun seasoning spicy? Cajun spice is known for its bold flavour. When you make it at home, you can adjust the amount of cayenne pepper and potentially substitute it for smoked paprika pepper.
