A grilled cheese sandwich combines cheese and crispy, buttered bread. When the bread is toasted on a pan, it produces a gooey melted cheese that is known around the world as one of the ultimate comfort foods of our time. Popular among teenagers, many adults also turn to this sandwich during a busy afternoon.
Sliced Bread, Grated Cheese, Softened Butter. Sprinkles of chopped salami. (Optional)
The Best Types of Bread are Regular Sliced Bread, Sourdough bread, Whole wheat bread, Brioche bread, Rye Bread, Ciabatta Bread, and Multigrain bread. The Best Cheeses to use in a grilled cheese sandwich are Cheddar, Gruyere, Mozzarella, American Cheese, and Gouda Cheese.
Pair it with sliced tomatoes, jalapenos chili, salami, and sun-dried tomatoes. You can customize this sandwich to suit your mood for the day. The type of cheeses and bread can also vary accordingly.
Spread a layer of butter on both sides of the bread. This will create a golden exterior. If the cheese is sharp and slightly salty, consider using unsalted butter.
Thinly slice the cheese and place it between the two pieces of bread. Consider mixing different types of cheeses to get a unique flavour. Mozzarella is a stretchy cheese that can pair with Gruyere.
Set the temperature to low heat. Cooking a grilled cheese sandwich on low heat ensures that the cheese has plenty of time to melt. A high temperature can cause the bread’s exterior to brown up faster than the cheese melts.
Place the sandwich on the pan. It takes approximately two to four minutes per side. Press down on the sandwich with a spatula. This will create an even browning on the exterior surface of the sandwich.
Flip the sandwich and cook for another two to four minutes until it is golden and the cheese has melted. Remove the sandwich from the pan and let it rest for a minute before slicing. This will allow the cheese to set slightly.
Consider adding tomato slices to the cheese sandwich. Other ideas include sautéed mushrooms, fig jam, pesto, truffle oil, fried salami, and thinly sliced pepper.
Most people have a grill pan or a regular skillet at home, but not everyone owns a sandwich maker. Using a sandwich maker has its perks. The pre-made shape inside the ‘sandwich-maker‘ helps shape the sandwich into a specific design.
It also insulates the sandwich by compressing the edges and causing them to lock into one another. This adds more ingredients to the sandwich and prevents it from falling out. If you eat a lot of sandwiches, this could be a great tool in your kitchen.
Caprese salad would be a delightful side dish. Tangy tomatoes enhanced by a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, basil, and fresh mozzarella cheese would complement this dish well. A rich and creamy tomato soup can elevate the simple cheese sandwich to extraordinary levels of taste and flavour. Caesar salad is another option, with the chicken as protein. It can fill you up and add extra nutrition.
This sandwich is often prepared fresh. However, if you are making a large batch for the week, it can be stored in the refrigerator for two to three days, provided that it is a plain grilled cheese sandwich. Fillings such as tomato, pesto, or fig jam can alter the texture of the sandwich.
