Feta cheese is so much more than just a creamy topping for a salad. It is an incredible ingredient that can elevate your salad game. Plus, feta cheese is packed with protein and calcium. Many people are unaware of the incredible flavour combination when you pair feta cheese with strawberries. It translates to a match made in culinary heaven. The sweet strawberries along with the slightly salty feta cheese and the leafy greens create a very unique strawberry salad. Juicy and ripe strawberries create a sweet balance to the other ingredients in the dish. Spinach forms the base of this recipe. Its mild and earthy flavor complements the strawberries. Wash and dry the spinach thoroughly to ensure a crisp and clean taste. Crumbled Greek feta adds a tangy and creamy element to the dish.
The saltiness of the feta cheese enhances the sweetness of the strawberries. With a blend of sweet and savoury flavours, The vinaigrette helps to tie everything together. Combine apple cider vinegar with extra virgin olive oil and honey, and season with salt and ground black pepper.
Thoroughly wash the Strawberries. Chop them in half and add them to a bowl. Add one tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit with the sugar for twenty minutes. Macerating the strawberries adds sweetness and draws out the liquid. If your feta cheese is salty, cut it into cubes and soak it with a small amount of water for approximately five minutes. Drain the water and cut the cheese into cubes.
Wash the baby spinach and add it to the salad bowl. Kale leaves, romaine lettuce, and friese lettuce are substitutes for spinach. Add the ingredients to a bowl and mix. Then, drizzle all over the strawberry salad. Be gentle so that the feta cheese does not crumble.
Look for fresh, fragrant strawberries. Avoid strawberries with green patches. Choose strawberries with a deep maroon colour. Rinse the strawberries under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel. Remove the green leafy parts on top of the strawberry. Strawberry salad can be enhanced with arugula, spinach, or romaine lettuce. The best nuts include almonds, walnuts, and cashews. In terms of cheese, choose goat cheese or feta cheese. Other fruits and berries that can be added include blueberries and citrus.
A simple vinaigrette will work wonderfully as a salad dressing. You can use a neutral oil, such as light olive oil or grapeseed oil, as the foundation of the dressing. Balsamic vinegar and lemon juice will brighten up the salad. Honey, maple syrup, or molasses can add a complex layering of flavour’s. A poppy seed dressing will also add a great flavour to this salad. Fresh herbs such as mint and basil can elevate this salad.
Store in the refrigerator without adding the salad dressing. Strawberries and baby spinach have a short shelf life. For best results, consume within two days.
