Sauteed Mushrooms

When it comes to quick meals, few dishes can compete with a delicious, simple sauteed mushrooms dish made with basic ingredients like earthy mushrooms, onions, garlic, and a few spices. This dish is perfect for busy days when you are in the mood for a vegetarian meal.

Sauteed mushrooms

Mushrooms are low in calories and rich in nutrients. They are known for their immune-boosting properties and they also contain prebiotic fibres, which are essential for digestion. The interesting thing about mushrooms is that most people are unaware of how easy it is to cook at home, one of the key ingredients in this dish is the black pepper powder. This spice deeply enhances the flavour of the mushrooms.

Ingredients

Mushrooms, Onion, Garlic Cloves, White Pepper powder (optional), Black Pepper, Salt, Paprika Powder, Cooking oil, Parsley.

When selecting the right mushrooms for this dish, several varieties will work well. Consider Shiitake mushrooms for their rich, umami flavour, whilst cremini mushrooms have a stronger flavour than white and brown button mushrooms, which are considered mild and adaptable. You can also use a combination of mushrooms.

Onions and Garlic cloves add a sweet flavour to this dish. Spices such as White pepper, Black Pepper, and Paprika powder add a subtle heat to this dish. You can substitute paprika powder with cayenne pepper. The white pepper powder can be omitted, however the black pepper powder is an absolute necessity. You can use ground black pepper or crushed black pepper powder. Parsley is optional and used as a garnish.

Instructions

Finely chop the onion and garlic cloves. Add cooking oil to a pot and add the onion and garlic. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, until lightly browned. Sautéing will add a gentle sweetness to the dish and enhance the mushrooms’ flavour.

During that time, peel the mushrooms and wash them thoroughly under cold water, then drain and slice. Add the mushrooms to the pan and cook for five to eight minutes on Medium-high heat.

When mushrooms are cooked at the right temperature, they develop a rich, caramelized flavour. Add the white pepper powder, ground black pepper, paprika powder, and a light sprinkling of salt. Garnish with parsley and serve.

What can you Serve with Sauteed Mushrooms?

You can pair sauteed mushrooms with most dishes. Consider scrambled eggs or sunny-side-up eggs as a breakfast meal. This dish can also pair alongside protein dishes such as a Rib-eye steak or Lamb chops and if you want to take this dish over the top, consider pairing with a Caprese salad. For a light vegetarian meal, consider pairing with Garlic bread or Soft dinner rolls.

How to Store Sauteed Mushrooms?

Uncooked mushrooms usually last for 3 to 5 days in the fridge before they start to wilt and dry up. It is advisable to use the freshest mushrooms for this dish. Store the sauteed mushrooms in an airtight container in the refrigerator; they will keep for 2 to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave on high heat for 15 seconds. You can also reheat the mushrooms on the stove-top. We do not advise freezing the mushrooms, as this will alter their texture.
