Today, we will be making Garlic Butter Rice. This dish is delightful to prepare, and the process is incredibly simple. The main ingredients are rice, garlic, and butter. Garlic Butter rice is an easy dish that elevates plain rice into a special meal. The combination of butter and garlic adds a rich & savory flavour that complements many different meals.

This recipe pairs wonderfully with proteins like chicken, steak, or shrimp, and can also stand on its own as a vegetarian dish. The caramelized garlic adds to the flavour of the rice; along with butter, it makes this dish stand out from normal rice-based dishes.
Rice, Garlic, Chicken Stock Cube, Bay leaves, and Butter.
Garlic and butter are excellent partners for enhancing the flavor of dishes. To further elevate your main dish, consider using a chicken stock cube. You can also use a beef or vegetarian stock cube. Bay leaves add a subtle aroma that can enhance the overall taste. Long-grain rice varieties maintain their shape and stay fluffy. Jasmine rice is also a good option; basmati rice, known for its long, slender grains, works well for this dish. If you are considering adding protein, shrimp and thin beef strips will turn this dish into a fried rice meal.
To make this recipe, start by using a small or medium pot. Add a generous amount of butter to the pot, and then add the sliced garlic cloves. Sauté the garlic for three to four minutes. Once the garlic is caramelized, it will take on a nuttier profile, enhancing the dish’s buttery garlic flavor.

Thereafter, add the washed rice grains to the pot. Mix the rice with the garlic, then sauté for 1 minute. Add the water, bay leaves, and the chicken stock cube.

Cover the pot with a lid or foil and bring the water to a boil. Then, adjust the heat to the lowest and simmer for 13-14 minutes. After cooking the Rice, scoop it from the bottom up to fluff it. This process will make the rice airier and chewier. The rice is ready to eat and enjoy. Garnish with fresh parsley to serve.
Store in an airtight container in the fridge. Garlic butter rice will last 2 to 3 days. It also freezes well and can last for three months in the freezer. Thaw and defrost on the countertop. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop.
Garlic butter rice is an incredibly versatile dish. The flavours are savoury, especially with the caramelized garlic. You can serve it with a range of different main meals. Consider options such as Chicken Curry, Panang Curry, Butter Chicken, Thai Green Curry, or Tom yum goong.
You can enhance the flavor of your rice by adding sautéed onions. When considering whether to rinse rice, two important factors to keep in mind are reducing starch and removing impurities. The need to rinse depends on the type of rice you are using, so it’s essential to ask two key questions: where the rice comes from and how it was packaged. To determine if rinsing is necessary, add water to the rice. If the water becomes murky or you see bran floating, rinse the rice several times until the water runs clear.
If you purchase rice from a reputable brand and the water runs clear after a few rinses, it likely indicates that the rice was washed before packaging. In such cases, one or two rinses should suffice. The ratio is 1:2, meaning you should use 1 cup of rice for every 2 cups of water. You can adjust the amount of rice based on the number of servings you need; typically, 1 cup of rice serves about three to four people.
