When these breads are baked or broiled, they become a wonderfully crunchy accompaniment to your favorite main dishes. This garlic bread recipe features a crispy, golden baguette generously coated with rich, garlicky butter. Garlic bread is truly a heavenly creation! Many people would agree that the combination of creamy butter, flecks of parsley, and garlic is delightful.

In Ancient Rome, garlic was preferred for its medicinal properties. As Italians began migrating to all parts of the world, they took their favorite recipes with them, firmly implanted in their minds. In America, many Italian restaurants began serving garlic bread. It was commonly offered for free before the main meal was served.

Ingredients

Baguette, Butter, Garlic, Parsley.

You can use different types of bread to make Garlic Bread. Consider a French baguette if you prefer bite-sized bread. Slice diagonally, and it will have many portions. Baguettes are readily available at most supermarkets worldwide and are perfect for large family gatherings and parties. Baguettes have a chewy texture; they are perfect for soups and stews, as the bread softens when dipped into broth-based dishes.

Now, if you want to create an appetizer that is more satiating, then focaccia bread would be your best bet. Focaccia bread has a softer texture and a dense structure. It is ideal for individuals who are serving lean proteins and a heavy meat-based meal. Artisan bread is another great option; it comes in different sizes and features larger slices than Baguette and Focaccia, though it can be sliced horizontally.

Instructions

Using the Oven Method

Preheat the oven to 150°C. In a small bowl, prepare the garlic butter by combining softened butter with minced garlic and chopped herbs. If you are using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt; if you are using salted butter, you can omit the salt. Mix the ingredients together with a fork. Next, cut the baguette into slices about 1 inch thick. Be careful not to cut all the way through; you want to create pockets for the garlic butter mixture.

To ensure every bite is full of flavor, generously spread your garlic butter mixture over the garlic bread. Make sure the butter is evenly distributed for a consistent taste. Next, wrap the baguette in aluminum foil and place it on a baking sheet. Ensure that your oven has been preheated for at least 15 minutes before you put the baking sheet inside. Bake the baguette for an additional 5 minutes to achieve a crispy, golden crust. For an extra savory touch, you can sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top of the baguette before baking. Once baked, remove the baguette from the oven and allow it to cool.

Using the Stove-top method

Instead of placing the sliced baguette in the oven. Finely dice the garlic and finely chop the parsley.

Add garlic and parsley to the softened butter. Then butter the bread with garlic butter and toast it in a non-stick pan or a grill pan. Many people enjoy eating garlic bread alongside pasta, soups, stews, barbecues, and casseroles like Alfredo bake.

Different types of Garlic Bread

In Italy, different regions have their own unique ways of making garlic bread, with varying ingredients and spices. Tuscan Bruschetta is famously called the ‘original garlic bread.’ In Central Italy, thick slices of rustic Tuscan bread, rubbed with raw garlic, drizzled with olive oil, and sprinkled with salt, are a favorite among locals.

In Southern Italy, regions such as Sicily, Puglia, and Calabria use wood-fired bread, also known as Altamura Pane Cunzato. The bread is topped with anchovies, chili flakes, garlic, and olive oil. In Lombardy and Piedmont, Garlic bread is fancier than in the Southern parts. They use Butter instead of olive oil and top their garlic bread with cheese and their favorite herbs. Garlic bread originated in Italy; it made its way to France as focaccia, which uses a liberal amount of garlic. They incorporate Parmesan cheese and mozzarella, along with herbs such as oregano and parsley.
