Sweet Potato Mash

Sweet potato mash is a delicious and easy side dish that adds warmth and comfort to your main meals. Made from boiled sweet potatoes, this mash has a creamy texture with a naturally sweet flavor.

This versatile dish can be customized in several ways. If you want to add a little heat, consider adding roasted garlic, which will enhance the sweet flavors of this dish whilst adding a subtle savouriness. If you are enjoying an Asian feast, add a touch of soy sauce and hoisin sauce to boost the flavor.

Ingredients

Sweet potato, Butter, White pepper, Salt.

Sweet potatoes are a root vegetable that comes in three varieties: white, purple, and orange. Orange sweet potatoes are sweeter than white and purple ones. Choosing sweet potatoes with a firm texture will yield a smoother mash.

Larger sweet potatoes have a more consistent flavor than the smaller ones. If you’re using the white or purple sweet potatoes, consider adding a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup for added sweetness. Butter enhances the creamy flavor of the sweet potatoes. You can add milk or cream to enhance the mash’s richness. White pepper and salt are added in minimal amounts to complement the natural flavors of the sweet potato mash.

Instructions

Cut off both tips of the sweet potatoes and peel the skin. Then, cut them into one-inch cubes. Once the sweet potatoes are cubed, lightly rinse them in the running water. Add water and bring to a boil. Add the sweet potatoes and boil them for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are completely tender.

To check if the sweet potatoes are fully cooked, poke the sweet potato with a fork. For convenience, a handheld immersion blender works great for pureeing them, but you can also use a potato masher. Once you’ve mashed the sweet potatoes, stir in three tablespoons of butter and keep blending until you achieve the right consistency.
