Garlic Yogurt Sauce

Today, we are making Garlic yogurt. This creamy condiment is made from simple ingredients that provide a light yet flavorful taste. This sauce is commonly used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, with variations also found in South Asia.

Garlic Yogurt Sauce

One of the best aspects of garlic yogurt sauce is its versatility; it pairs wonderfully with meat, vegetables, and bread. Interestingly, Yogurt was discovered thousands of years ago by accident when milk was stored in animal skin, which led to its fermentation and the creation of Yogurt. The early nomadic people of Iran, Turkey, and the Balkans embraced Yogurt for its ability to stay fresher for longer in their warmer climates.

Ingredients

Greek Yogurt, Lemon, Salt, Pepper and Garlic Cloves.

Choose a thick Greek yogurt, as it will maintain its texture. Adding lemon introduces acidity, which balances the creaminess of the yogurt. Salt and pepper are essential for flavor. Garlic cloves provide heat and pungency; if you prefer more heat, consider adding red chili flakes. For an herbaceous note, you can add finely chopped dill, parsley, or oregano. If you’re looking for a cheesy flavor, grated Parmesan cheese or Grana Padano works well. Another great option is nutritional yeast, which has a natural cheese flavor and offers nutritional benefits.

Instructions

Finely chop the garlic. Add salt, pepper, and lemon. Mix with a whisk or fork. The consistency needs to be smooth and light. If the yogurt has lumps, which is normal in Greek yogurt, keep whisking until the sauce is smooth.

What to Serve with Garlic Yogurt Sauce?

This simple garlic yogurt sauce offers a perfect blend of flavors. Once you try it, you’ll want to drizzle it on everything. It’s fantastic on a juicy steak or in a chicken shawarma or beef shawarma wrap. If you’re looking for something rich in protein, consider using it with beef or chicken shawarma. Grilled meats like rib-eye steak and lamb chops are also excellent choices.

How to Store Garlic Yogurt Sauce?

Store in the fridge in an airtight container for two to three days. Whilst it may not be possible to freeze this sauce, as it contains lemon, which can cause the ingredients to separate, the yogurt sauce can be frozen in small cubes in an ice container. However, the texture may change when the Garlic sauce is defrosted.
